The dividing line isn’t enthusiasm or YouTube tutorials — it’s specifically whether you’ve worked with high-tension springs before.

A new garage door is the largest moving object in your home. Single-car panels weigh 130–180 pounds. Double-car doors hit 250–400 pounds. Solid wood and insulated commercial-grade doors push past that. The springs that counterbalance them store enough energy to break a wrist, blind an eye, or crack a skull when they fail. None of that is exaggeration — every full-time garage door tech knows someone who lost a finger to this work.

That’s the reality. What follows is the actual job, broken into the phases nobody walks through honestly.

Phase 1: Measuring and Ordering the Right Door

This is the phase where most DIY installs already go wrong, before any tools come out.

A garage door isn’t a generic part. The width and height of your rough opening have to be measured precisely, not the width of the existing door, but the opening. You also need the headroom (the space between the top of the opening and the ceiling), the side room (the space on either side of the opening), and the backroom (how far the tracks need to run into the garage). Get any of these wrong and the door won’t fit, won’t balance, or won’t clear the opener.

You also need to specify the right spring system. Spring sizing depends on door weight, which depends on material, insulation level, glass inserts, and panel thickness.
