When the door operates normally, the panel moves cleanly through that opening with no contact. The weather seal along the side trim is the only thing touching the panel, compressing slightly to keep weather, dust, and rodents out.
When you start hearing scraping, scratching, or seeing visible wear marks on the side of the door or the frame, something has shifted that distance. Either the panel has moved closer to the frame (panel bowing or strut failure), or the track guiding the panel has shifted relative to the frame (track setback issue).
